Welcome to The Natural Shoe Store.

Here you will find all the information you need to get started with our shoes. From the moment you receive them and try them on, through to repairs and resoling when they have moved through life with you.

Size and Fit

Trying on your shoes for the first time

When you first try your shoes on, we recommending doing so inside, preferably on carpet to prevent marking the soles.

As you try them on, ensure the laces, buckles or zips are done up, this helps to hold your foot in the correct place in the shoe and give you the most accurate feeling on the length.

Length

You are feeling for a small amount of space in front of your toes, about a centimetre or so. If your toes touch the end, they are almost certainly too small as most styles will not stretch in the length at all. If you are only lightly brushing the end slightly, please feel free to give us a call and we can help you determine if you need to go up a size.

Ankle Hold

A good fit around the ankle is also ideal. A small amount of movement in the ankle may dissipate with time, though you still want to feel held. You will also find the buckles and laces will be able to be tightened further as the leather moulds to your feet.

Width

Most of our shoes will give in the width, dependant mostly on the brand and upper material.

Duckfeet has a significant amount of ease in their leather. They will stretch in the width as much as needed when there is pressure, warmth and moisture. If you have enough space, they will not give as there is no pressure. If you find they feel a little too big in the width, but they are the right length, their Wool Insoles can help take up some of the extra space.

Nature shoes will give, though not as significantly as Duckfeet. Suede and tumbled leather styles will stretch more quickly and be softer than nubuck or Nature’s standard leather.

Be Lenka, Barbarics and Vivobarefoot will have more ease in their natural leather styles than their synthetic styles.

Barefoot Shoes

If you are trying barefoot shoes for the first time, we recommend wearing them in slowly. It can take some time for your feet to adjust to the new feeling, so we recommend starting slowly, no more than an hour the first day and building up to a full day of wear. If you feel any tenderness, take a break and wait for the tenderness to pass before returning to your barefoot journey.

Caring for your shoes

Keeping your shoes in good condition

To help keep your shoes in circulation longer, we recommend the following care to help to keep them in good condition.

Smooth and Tumbled Leather

A little bit of neutral colour, natural leather care at regular intervals, about once a month. Don’t use too much at one time. It’s better to use a little less a bit more often. Let the cream sit a few minutes and polish afterwards with a soft cloth.

If the shoes get dirty, clean them with a damp cloth. Let the shoes dry thoroughly and treat the leather again with shoe cream or leather conditioner. Be attentive to edges and seams, which should also be treated to maintain the leather and protect your shoes against water.

Nubuck and Suede

Before wear, we recommend using a protective suede spray to preserve the appearance and water resistance of the suede and help prevent stains. If your shoes get wet, allow them to dry naturally at room temperature. Remove any dirt or debris by brushing with a soft brush such as an old toothbrush or a specific suede care brush.

Synthetic Uppers

If your shoes are a smooth vegan leather or something similar, you may choose to use a protective spray to help prevent staining and moisture from getting into the material.

If they are an open mesh or gym style shoes, they are unlikely to need any specific care. Some styles can be washed my hand in warm soapy water and left to line dry in the shade, this is not recommended for any
styles that have natural leather, suede or cork.
